50th Anniversary Screening of 'Space Battleship Yamato' Announced, Trailer Supervised by Hideaki Anno Released
The iconic sci-fi anime 'Space Battleship Yamato', beloved by many, celebrates the 50th anniversary of its original broadcast. To commemorate this occasion, selected episodes from the first TV series, curated by Hideaki Anno, will be screened in theaters across Japan. The "Space Battleship Yamato 50th Anniversary Selection Screening" will be held from December 27th, featuring episodes in HD remaster for the first time. The screenings will take place in 44 theaters nationwide, including Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo, and will run for three weeks, with each program consisting of three episodes shown weekly.
On October 6th, 1974, at 7:30 p.m., a ship that would later influence countless creators and works launched into space: 'Space Battleship Yamato'. Back when animation was still referred to as "TV manga," this 26-episode series left a significant impact on viewers, became a social phenomenon, and is still loved by many as it celebrates its 50th voyage this year.
This special screening project is part of the 50th-anniversary celebration led by Hideaki Anno, who stated, "Without my encounter with 'Space Battleship Yamato', my life as it is today would not exist." The 50th-anniversary project also features screening events, exhibitions, and publications.
Three different posters have been produced to match the content of each week’s screening. Program 1 features Susumu Kodai wielding a Cosmo Gun in front of Yamato. Program 2 depicts heroine Yuki Mori and Analyzer, with the ominous appearance of a Beemera alien in the background. Program 3 shows Starsha gazing at Yamato upon its return to Earth. Each visual reflects the core story of its respective program.
These posters have been refined under Anno’s supervision from past LaserDisc and DVD package visuals. Attendees will receive mini posters (A4 size/double-sided/three types in total) as a special gift, distributed on a weekly, limited quantity, first-come-first-served basis.
