"The Apothecary Diaries" (Hero Bunko) Volumes 1–15 (Author: Natsu Hyuga, Illustrator: Touko Shino / Publisher: Imagica Infos, Distributor: Shufu to Seikatsu Sha)
The Mystery of Medicine, Poison, and Romance
Set in the imperial court, the story follows Maomao, a young apothecary who is kidnapped and sold into the palace as a servant. Her natural curiosity leads her to investigate a mysterious incident, forever altering her life. She catches the attention of influential figures such as the high-ranking consort Gyokuyou and the handsome eunuch Jinshi, gradually getting entangled in palace conspiracies.
The novel series was first published under the Hero Bunko imprint in August 2014 and currently spans 15 volumes. The series helped spark the recent "imperial court drama" boom in Japan. The anime adaptation's second season has been airing since January this year.
At the end of September 2023, just before the first season premiered, the total circulation was at 24 million copies. By the end of the first season, it had surged past 33 million. The momentum continued, reaching 38 million copies by September 2024, and as of late February 2025, it has officially surpassed 40 million.
