Weekly Shonen Jump Increases Minimum Page Rates: New System Effective from November

The editorial team of Weekly Shonen Jump announced on November 18 via their official X (formerly Twitter) account that they have revised and increased the magazine's minimum page rates. This marks a significant step toward improving working conditions for creators. Writers can now choose whether to enter a one-year exclusive contract upon the start of serialization, with the decision being entirely optional.

Revised Rates for Artists

Starting with issues published from November 2024, the minimum rates are:

Monochrome Pages: ¥20,900 ($135) per page (previously ¥18,700)
Color Pages: ¥31,350 ($203) per page (previously ¥28,050)
The updated rates aim to support better working environments for creators, using profits from both print and digital magazine sales.

Support for New and Long-Term Creators

For debut works, the minimum rate of ¥20,900 applies. If another publication offers higher rates, negotiations can be made. In cases where writing and art duties are split, compensation distribution is determined collaboratively. Furthermore, creators of new serializations receive an initial grant of ¥500,000, with annual rate increases tied to serialization duration.

Meanwhile, rates for the quarterly Jump GIGA are set lower:

Monochrome Pages: ¥13,200 ($85)
Color Pages: ¥19,800 ($128)

Industry Impact

This revision reflects Shueisha’s commitment to fostering better opportunities and conditions for manga artists, ensuring that they are supported throughout their creative journeys.
