Kotono Mitsuishi's Pokémon Life: Favorites Include Ditto! Also Interested in Kaede's Teddiursa

A new character, Kaede, appears starting from episode 47 (airing on the 19th) of the popular anime "Pokémon" (TV Tokyo, every Friday at 6:55 PM; broadcast date and content may vary by region). In commemoration, we conducted an interview with Kotono Mitsuishi, who plays Kaede, to hear about her memories with Pokémon.

In episode 47, for Riko’s Terastal training and basic test, Riko, Roy, and Dot head to gym leader Kaede in Cercle Town. However, Sango from the Explorers also joins unexpectedly, leading to a sweets-making showdown! The episode will cover the progress of Riko and Nyaroate's Terastal training.

Interviewer: You have appeared several times in the Pokémon TV series, including the special "Mewtwo! I Am Here" as Domino. How did you feel about being cast as Kaede this time?

Mitsuishi: I had been offered roles in the series several times before, but I am happy that I finally had the timing right to accept it this time.

Interviewer: Do you have any other memories or episodes related to Pokémon besides anime?

Mitsuishi: I enjoy games as a hobby, not just for work, so I also play Pokémon. The first game I played was "Pokémon Red and Green," where I chose Bulbasaur as my partner. When asked about my favorite Pokémon, it's Ditto, but I also find Kaede’s Teddiursa, "Kuma-chan," very cute. Currently, I am playing "Pokémon Sleep."

Interviewer: Kaede makes her debut in episode 47. How did you develop her character?

Mitsuishi: Kaede speaks with a "~" at the end of her sentences, right? I initially stuck to the script and tested with a relaxed and airy manner of speaking because I wanted to minimize any discomfort for gamers familiar with Kaede’s lines and impression. However, as animation requires actual acting, I had discussions and adjustments with the sound director.

Interviewer: How specifically did you adjust your performance to bring the character to life?

Mitsuishi: I focused on Kaede's "feelings" as a gym leader. Gym leaders interact with children daily and encourage them through battles. So, instead of focusing on how she ends her sentences, this time I tried to draw out Riko's best qualities and encourage her by saying, "Grow up to be great."

Interviewer: So, you place emphasis on the character's feelings rather than just the words in the script?

Mitsuishi: There can be discrepancies between the game or script and the character's actual emotions, but we have to make it believable that these characters and Pokémon really exist in this world. We adults must think seriously and create genuinely, especially because many children watch this show. It should not just be superficial. Pokémon has a team with strong feelings, making it a very pleasant workplace.

Interviewer: Once again, could you tell us about the highlights and points of interest in episode 47 where Kaede appears?

Mitsuishi: Episode 47 involves Riko’s battle, and many might sympathize with her struggles. I hope viewers will appreciate how much energy Kaede could give her. Also, there are scenes involving Ikue Otani's character, Sandwich-chan, which were fun to play. I believe that my enjoyment as an actress comes through (laughs). Please enjoy both the “sweet” and “bitter” sides of Kaede, and look forward to the broadcast.
