The film was released in 488 theaters across Japan, including 51 IMAX, 63 4DX, 13 MX4D, and 9 Dolby Cinema locations. On its opening day, it drew in 260,000 viewers and grossed ¥370 million, surpassing the opening day earnings of the previous series record-holder, My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes' Mission (released August 6, 2021, ¥3.43 billion in total box office revenue), by 118%. Toho, the film's distributor, stated that this strong start suggests the film could surpass ¥4 billion in box office revenue, becoming the highest-grossing entry in the franchise.

On the official X account, a celebratory post read: "My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: You're Next is now the series' top-grossing hit! With 2.46 million tickets sold and ¥3.52 billion in revenue, it's the biggest success in the My Hero Academia movie series! Thank you for your overwhelming support! Let's keep going PLUS ULTRA in theaters!"

The film is based on the hit manga My Hero Academia, which has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Set in a world where superhuman abilities known as "Quirks" are commonplace, the story follows protagonist Izuku Midoriya (Deku), who strives to become a hero and protect society from villains who misuse their Quirks. The manga began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in July 2014 and concluded on August 5, 2024. The anime adaptation premiered in April 2016, and the production of the 8th season has already been confirmed.

This latest movie features an original story overseen by the series' creator, Kohei Horikoshi, who also provided character designs. Set in the same timeline as the anime’s 7th season, the story depicts a society devastated by the conflict between heroes and villains, with escaped convicts known as "Datsugoku" running rampant. Just before the final battle between the heroes, including Izuku Midoriya, and the villains, a world-shaking event begins to unfold.
