The trailer introduces Roz, a cutting-edge assistive robot designed to serve humans, who crash-lands on an untamed, nature-filled island. As she travels around the island, still attempting to fulfill her programmed purpose of assisting others, she approaches various animals, asking them what they need. However, the animals initially fear her, calling her a "monster." Things change when Roz accidentally stumbles upon a goose egg, which she cares for until it hatches.
The newly hatched chick, the first thing it sees being Roz, calls her "Mama!" and starts following her everywhere. Roz names the bird “Brightbill” and soon takes on the challenges of motherhood, with the help of outcast fox Fink and experienced possum Pinktail. "I used to learn with my mind, but now I feel something deep in my chest," Roz confesses, marking her emotional awakening.
As Roz learns about life and begins to develop feelings, the time comes for Brightbill to learn to fly and leave the nest. Roz feels the first pangs of sorrow at the thought of their parting, her face reflecting sadness for the first time. Just as Roz starts to understand compassion and love, a sudden threat emerges—a battle robot descends onto the island. What fate awaits Roz and the wild island?
Based on Peter Brown’s beloved children’s book series The Wild Robot, the film tells the story of Roz, who is programmed for modern urban life but quickly discovers her inability to function as intended in the wild. She learns from the island’s animals and begins adapting to this unfamiliar world. The film beautifully portrays Roz’s growth as she witnesses the harsh realities of survival, learns about love and loss, and ultimately finds her place in this new life.
Critics have praised the film, with comments such as, “A visually stunning and deeply emotional film. Vivid sequences and stellar voice acting make The Wild Robot one of the best films of 2024!” and, “A love letter to fans of animated films. From the storytelling and animation style to the music and character design, every aspect shines. I was hooked from the moment I entered the world of this film.”
The Wild Robot has been officially selected for the Animation section of the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, which runs from October 28 to November 6.
