From director Tatsuyuki Nagai, writer Mari Okada, and character designer Masayoshi Tanaka—the trio behind heart-moving youth trilogy films Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (2013), The Anthem of the Heart (2015), and Her Blue Sky (2019)—comes their latest original animated feature, Fureru (released on October 4). To commemorate its opening day, new visuals and six new scene photos featuring the mysterious creature "Fureru," the film’s mascot character, have been unveiled.

The story revolves around childhood friends Aki (voiced by Ren Nagase), Ryo (voiced by Ryota Bando), and Yuta (voiced by Kentaro Maeda), who grew up together on the same island. Now 20 years old and living together in Takadanobaba, Tokyo, their bond remains strong, thanks to the telepathy-like power of "Fureru," a strange creature they brought from the island. When they physically touch, they can hear each other’s inner thoughts—a secret only the three of them share. However, after a certain incident, another hidden power of "Fureru" begins to surface, and their friendship is put to the test.

The newly released visual encapsulates the essence of Fureru's key moments, showcasing the friendship between the young men and the mysterious creature as they live under the blue sky of Takadanobaba, Tokyo. The image hints at the enduring connection between Aki, Ryo, Yuta, and "Fureru" from childhood to adulthood. A faint "thread" visible in the building windows adds a layer of mystery that viewers can enjoy even after watching the film.

The new scene photos provide a glimpse into the mysterious life of "Fureru," one of the most intriguing characters in the film. Resembling a hedgehog with its spiky appearance, "Fureru" is a legendary creature from the island where Aki and the others were born. Its telepathy-like power connects the friends, allowing them to understand each other without speaking. However, as "Fureru's" other hidden abilities come to light, the friendship it helped forge begins to change.

Director Nagai shared insights into "Fureru's" creation, stating, "Originally, it was meant to be an older brother figure connecting the three characters, but after many twists and turns, it became the mysterious creature 'Fureru.' The entire staff put their hearts into making it as cute as possible. I hope you enjoy watching its role in the story," adding that the character was brought to life alongside writer Mari Okada and character designer/animation director Masayoshi Tanaka.
