The winners of the "Japan Game Awards 2024" for the Annual Game Category, which honors outstanding game titles, have been announced. The Grand Prize was awarded to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo).

The Japan Game Awards' "Annual Game Category" accepts public votes for games released between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024. After deliberation by the selection committee, the winning titles were chosen.

The Grand Prize winner was selected from among 11 nominees for the Excellence Award.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Zelda BotW), offers players the freedom to explore vast "lands" that stretch endlessly and "skies" high above the clouds. Will you soar through the skies and discover mysterious floating islands? Or use Link’s newfound powers to confront the disturbances in Hyrule? The game offers a boundless adventure.

Following its release, the game became a global sensation, breaking the Guinness World Record as the “fastest-selling Nintendo video game.”

Within just three days of its release on May 12, 2023, it surpassed 10 million copies sold, smashing the previous record held by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (12.08 million copies in 24 days). It also became the "fastest-selling title in the Legend of Zelda series," marking a new milestone in the franchise's 37-year history.
