New 'Patlabor' Project to Launch in 2026: 'Mobile Police Patlabor EZY' Directed by Yutaka Izubuchi and Produced by J.C.STAFF
A new project in the popular anime series "Mobile Police Patlabor," titled "Mobile Police Patlabor EZY," is set to launch in 2026. Along with this announcement, details about the staff have been revealed: Yutaka Izubuchi will direct, Kazunori Ito will handle the screenplay and series composition, and animation production will be handled by J.C.STAFF.
The project was first announced in 2017, and a pilot film was shown at an event in 2022. As the project moves into full production, a new teaser visual has been revealed, featuring an updated version of the "Ingram" mecha. The design reflects the 30-year history of the "Ingram," which has undergone numerous modifications and repairs throughout the timeline of the series. More details will be announced later.
In addition, to coincide with the revival screening of "Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie" (September 20) organized by Japan's largest review service for movies, dramas, and anime, "Filmarks," a screening of the pilot film for "Mobile Police Patlabor EZY" has also been decided. Attendees of the revival screening will receive a special gift, a double-sided A5 mini poster featuring both "Mobile Police Patlabor: The Movie" and "Mobile Police Patlabor EZY."
The "Mobile Police Patlabor" series originally debuted as an original video animation (OVA) in April 1988. Set in late 20th-century Tokyo, the story follows members of the Special Vehicles Section 2 as they operate police robots, known as "Ingrams," to fight crime in a world where robots patrol the city streets with the emblem of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police shining on their chests. The series became a hit with OVAs, movies, comics, and a TV anime, and it continues to be loved by fans even though real-world time has surpassed the timeline of the story. It was also adapted into a live-action version directed and written by Mamoru Oshii.
