Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Prequel Anime Announced for Theatrical Release

The Mobile Suit Gundam SEED franchise is expanding once again with the newly announced anime film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM.

The announcement was made during Gundam Conference SPRING 2026, an event showcasing the latest updates from the long running Gundam series.

Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Confirmed as a Theatrical Anime Project

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO serves as a story set before the 2024 anime film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which premiered in Japan on January 26, 2024.

The story is based on a scenario written during the planning stages of SEED FREEDOM by late series composer Chiaki Morosawa and writer Shigeru Morita. During the conference, a new teaser video was unveiled, along with confirmation that the project will be released as a theatrical feature.

Gundam Franchise Continues Global Expansion

Since the original Mobile Suit Gundam television anime first aired on April 7, 1979, the franchise has produced more than 90 works across anime, films, and related media.

Beyond animation, the Gundam brand has expanded into a wide range of businesses including merchandise, games, amusement attractions, and music, supported by fans worldwide.

Bandai Namco also revealed several milestones for the franchise. Total shipments of Gunpla model kits have surpassed 800 million units, while the Gundam Card Game has issued more than 630 million cards worldwide.

In addition, SD Gundam G Generation Eternal, released in 2025, surpassed 8 million downloads globally within its first year.

Gundam Conference Highlights New Challenges for the Series

The annual Gundam Conference has become a major venue for unveiling new projects related to the franchise. Last year’s event featured the first information for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX as well as details about the Gundam pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.

This year’s announcement of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO marks another major step for the globally popular anime franchise.
