It was announced on April 3 that the manga The Prince of Tennis, created by Takeshi Konomi, will officially come to an end. The final chapter of its sequel series The New Prince of Tennis, currently serialized in Jump SQ., will bring the story to a close. With this, the franchise will conclude its 27 year history since its original debut in 1999. A Legendary Sports Manga That Defined a Generation
The Prince of Tennis follows Ryoma Echizen, a tennis prodigy and student at Seishun Academy Junior High School. Through intense matches and rivalries, the story portrays his growth alongside teammates and his encounters with unique opponents. The series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2008 and became a major hit, with over 60 million copies of its manga volumes in circulation.
The franchise expanded widely across media, including a television anime adaptation in 2001, a musical stage adaptation in 2003, and a live action film in 2006 starring Kanata Hongo.
The Story Moves to Its Final Stage
The sequel, The New Prince of Tennis, began serialization in Jump SQ. in 2009. The story shifted its setting to international competition, depicting Ryoma and his peers competing against top players from around the world.
Earlier this March, creator Takeshi Konomi revealed on his official X account that the story had entered its final phase. He shared that only a few chapters remained and expressed gratitude to readers and everyone involved, encouraging fans to experience Ryoma’s final match in real time.
