Serialized in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, the series is a dystopian science fiction story depicting a controlled society dominated by fungi. The work has been highly praised for its thematic exploration of questions such as “What is freedom?” and “What does it mean to be human?”
The story has also caught the attention of Hajime Isayama, creator of Attack on Titan, who has spoken highly of the manga. In this narrative of despair and resistance, humanity lives under the rule of fungi in a tightly managed society. The protagonist Dante, considered an irregular existence in this world, encounters a mysterious girl. Their meeting leads him to resolve to overturn the very principles that govern this world.
With an unpredictable storyline that continually questions the nature of humanity and freedom, the series has gained strong acclaim among readers.

Comment from Original Creator Ayaka Katayama
“Fungus and Iron is becoming an anime…!
When I first heard about it, I could hardly believe it. Now that the announcement has finally been made, I’m still savoring the joy of realizing it’s truly happening. The scripts and various visuals I’ve already received have been created with great care and sincerity toward the world of Fungus and Iron. I’m truly grateful to everyone involved in the anime production.
Supervising the anime has been exciting every time! And the reason I’ve been given this wonderful opportunity is thanks to all the readers who have supported the series. I’m looking forward to seeing Dante and the others come to life in motion, and to discovering how this slightly mysterious world will be portrayed in anime. I’ll be enjoying it together with viewers as a fan as well. Please look forward to it!”
