Firefly Wedding Gets TV Anime Adaptation This October by david production: A Mad Love Story Between an Assassin and a Noble Lady

The popular manga Firefly Wedding by Oreco Tachibana has officially been announced as a television anime adaptation. Produced by david production, the series will begin airing in October on Fuji TV’s Noitamina block, which broadcasts every Friday from 11:30 p.m. to midnight Japan time.

The original manga has surpassed 3.5 million copies in circulation. Serialization began in January 2023 on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE platform. The title has received widespread acclaim, ranking first in the Nationwide Bookstore Staff Recommended Comics 2024 and third in the Manga Fans Want to See Animated Ranking 2025.

Created by Oreco Tachibana, known for Promise Cinderella and for serving as character designer on the television anime The Dinner Table Detective, the story is set in the Meiji era, a period of rapid modernization in Japan. It follows Satoko Kirigaya, a refined young lady who dreams of marrying into a prestigious family to become her father’s pride, and Shinpei Goto, an assassin who is obsessively devoted to her. Their relationship unfolds through a forbidden contract marriage, forming a dark and intense tale of distorted love.

Production Staff and Creative Team

The anime is produced by david production, the studio behind the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series and Cells at Work. Takahiro Kamei, who has directed works such as Urusei Yatsura and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind, serves as director. Character design is handled by Yukiko Aikei, known for Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop and Your Lie in April.

This accomplished creative team brings Tachibana’s captivating characters to life in animation. Commenting on the adaptation, Tachibana expressed excitement about seeing how the characters entrusted to david production will move dynamically on screen.

Teaser Visual Revealed

A teaser visual illustrated by character designer Yukiko Aikei has been unveiled. Against a pitch black night illuminated by the ethereal glow of fireflies, Shinpei appears bloodstained yet wears a bewitching and fearless smile. He gently wraps his arm around Satoko’s back as she places her hand on his chest.

The softly flickering fireflies illuminate a traditional Japanese room reminiscent of the Meiji era. Satoko’s expression shows no trace of fear. Her calm and unwavering gaze conveys a quiet inner strength. The visual captures the delicate tension in their relationship and foreshadows the dangerous and forbidden love that lies ahead, making it a key image that reflects the core of the story.

Comments

■Oreco Tachibana (Original Author)
Firefly Wedding is being adapted into an anime. I cannot stop feeling excited. I cannot wait to see how the characters, entrusted to david production known for its compelling action, will move on screen. I am also truly looking forward to it from now, supported by a director who gently carries deep affection for the work, and by character designer Aikei, who carefully picks up even the smallest nuances.

I would love to watch the anime on television for the first time together with all of you readers, but I wonder if I will have to do supervision and other work beforehand after all. I will ask about it. I hope you will all enjoy it together with me.

■Takahiro Kamei (Director)
A story of two people who stand in opposition, an assassin and a noble lady. Their respective ways of life, delicacy and madness, the subtle movements of the heart and fierce battles, and suspense. I feel this is a profoundly layered work filled with many kinds of appeal.

So that we do not diminish these charms even slightly, the anime production team and I are working through trial and error every day. We will do our utmost with sincerity to meet everyone’s expectations, and we appreciate your continued support.

■Yukiko Aikei (Character Designer)
To me, the greatest charm of Tachibana sensei’s artwork is its delicacy and boldness, and the richness of expression that changes with the characters’ emotions. We are still in production and continuing to explore through trial and error, but I will do my best so that we can deliver as much of the original manga’s appeal as possible through the anime as well.
