The series is based on the manga of the same name, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2021. It is the latest work by Yusei Matsui, known for Neuro: Supernatural Detective and Assassination Classroom. Set in Kamakura in the year 1333, the story follows the life of Hojo Tokiyuki, the final heir of the Kamakura shogunate and a boy warrior famed as the most skilled at escaping. The manga has surpassed 4.5 million copies in circulation.

Set during the turbulent transition from the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period, the story portrays a boy who became a hero by fleeing and a legend by surviving. By focusing on a historical figure rarely chosen as the subject of storytelling, the series reimagines the life of Hojo Tokiyuki through Matsui’s unique interpretation, blending historical fact with dramatic storytelling.

The narrative begins with the sudden rebellion of Ashikaga Takauji, which leads to the collapse of the Kamakura shogunate. Tokiyuki, who was destined to live as its successor, loses his family and status at the age of eight due to the uprising.

Despite his losses, Tokiyuki possesses exceptional talent for escape and survival. Recognizing this ability, Yorishige Suwa, a Shinto priest from Shinano Province, guides the boy onto a path where he will flee and eventually become a hero. The series unfolds as a grand Nanboku cho era spectacle, depicting Tokiyuki’s wandering, hiding, and eventual counterattack in a dramatic tale of flight and resilience.
