Gintama New Movie Surpasses ¥1 Billion at the Box Office as Hideaki Sorachi Jokes “I’ll be fine if I get half the box office” in Celebration Message

The new Gintama movie has officially surpassed ¥1 billion at the box office, marking the strongest performance in the franchise’s theatrical history. Gintama: The Movie – Yoshiwara in Flames opened on February 13 and, as of its third week in theaters on March 1, has drawn a cumulative total of 705,808 moviegoers and earned ¥1,066,840,138, approximately 6.81 million dollars.

The film has already exceeded the final box office total of Gintama THE FINAL, which previously held the record as the highest grossing entry in the anime film series. Alongside the milestone announcement, original creator Hideaki Sorachi, who also serves as Super Advisor Gorilla, released a celebratory comment.

Sorachi remarked humorously, “I only gave some casual advice while drinking a highball, so I apologize for acting like a Super Advisor Gorilla. Please send all the applause and praise to the team who transformed my scribbled manga into a powerful, full scale film. I will be fine if I can receive half of the box office revenue.” His message mixed gratitude toward the voice cast and production staff with his trademark wit.

It was also revealed that the fourth round of theater admission bonuses will be distributed starting on the 6th. As a token of appreciation for audiences, a newly illustrated special visual by Sorachi will be given to attendees. The illustration features Gintoki’s cool side profile from the teaser visual, along with a newly written signature and a message of thanks to fans. A limited one week distribution celebrating the film’s ¥1 billion milestone will be available while supplies last.
In addition, approximately the first four minutes of the film will be released as a special preview video on the official YouTube channel, Gintama Channel, premiering at 8:00 PM on the 6th.

Gintama is based on the manga by Hideaki Sorachi, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2003. Set in an alternate Edo period ruled by aliens known as Amanto, the story follows freelance samurai Gintoki Sakata and his companions in a science fiction period comedy filled with action and satire.
The manga concluded in June 2019 and has surpassed 73 million copies in circulation. The television anime began airing on TV Tokyo in April 2006, followed by multiple theatrical anime films and live action adaptations starring Shun Oguri.

Gintama: The Movie – Yoshiwara in Flames is set in the underground pleasure district city of Yoshiwara, ruled by the Night King Housen and deprived of sunlight. Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura of the Yorozuya venture into the city in what is widely regarded as one of the most intense and celebrated arcs in the original manga, now adapted as a completely new animated feature film.
