New Kochikame Anime Project Announced for the First Time in 10 Years Ahead of the Series’ 50th Anniversary

The legendary gag manga KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops (JP: こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所), which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump for nearly 40 years without a single hiatus, is returning with a brand new anime project titled New KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops.

As the project name suggests, the new anime will feature a refreshed approach with an entirely new cast, while animation production will once again be handled by Studio Gallop. This marks the first full scale new Kochikame anime production since 2016, making it a return after a decade. Details about the new cast are scheduled to be announced in September 2026.

The project is being produced to commemorate the series’ 50th anniversary of serialization, which it will reach in 2026. The announcement was made on December 20 at Jump Festa 2026 during the Jump Station stage event.

During the stage presentation, the official 50th anniversary logo for the Kochikame manga was unveiled, followed by the reveal of the new anime project title Shin Kochira Katsushika ku Kameari Koen mae Hashutsujo, along with its official logo. It was also confirmed that Studio Gallop, which previously produced the 1996 television anime adaptation, is currently working enthusiastically on the new series, further energizing the audience.

A teaser visual was also released, depicting a nostalgic scene well known to Kochikame fans. The illustration shows the present day intake tower of the Kanamachi Water Purification Plant in Katsushika Ward, with protagonist Kankichi Ryotsu raising his hand as if greeting viewers, evoking the spirit of the original series.

Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1976 to 2016, the manga follows police officer Kankichi Ryotsu, who works at the Kameari Park Front Police Station. Set in the traditional downtown neighborhoods of Tokyo, the story humorously depicts Ryotsu’s daily antics alongside his colleagues and local residents. The series became a massive hit, spawning a long running television anime as well as live action television dramas and films starring Shingo Katori.

The television anime originally aired as a regular weekly series from June 1996 to December 2004, followed by irregular broadcast specials from January 2005 through September 2016.
