Girl Crush Anime Announced as TBS Unveils the First K POP Themed Television Series in Japan
The manga Girl Crush has been confirmed for a television anime adaptation, marking the first time in Japan that K POP is used as the main theme in an animated series. The project is planned and produced by TBS Television and ENISHIYA, and the series will air on TBS and other networks. Together, the two companies will present a coming of age story about girls striving to shine in the world of K POP idols.

The original manga follows the youth and aspirations of girls aiming to debut as K POP idols. It launched in 2019 in the LINE Manga label Comic Nicola, a joint initiative by the fashion magazine Nicola from Shinchosha and the manga magazine Comic Bunch. The digital edition has been released up to volume eight, while the print comic has reached volume four. The series has surpassed nine hundred thousand copies in total circulation.

Its popularity has grown beyond Japan. In 2021, the Korean language edition of Girl Crush won the New Work of the Year Award at the 2021 RIDIBOOKS COMIC AWARD, drawing global attention from readers and industry watchers alike.
Following the anime announcement, creator Midori Tayama shared her excitement. She commented that she is thrilled every time she reads the scenario, expressing deep gratitude to the staff for their careful understanding and respect for the work. She added that she is eagerly looking forward to the day when Tenka performs on screen and hopes fans will anticipate it as well.
A newly drawn inspire visual has also been released. At its center is the protagonist Tenka Momose, who stares ahead with a cool and captivating gaze. The visual incorporates memorable lines from Tenka throughout the story, capturing the work’s energy, realism and her direct unshakable strength. Along with the visual, a commemorative movie for the TV anime announcement was unveiled. The short video is composed of key scenes from the original manga built around the inspire visual.
