From Viral Horror Game to Film Adaptation

The Convenience Store was released on Steam in February 2020. Soon after launch, the title became a favorite among streamers and VTubers. As of August 28, 2025, gameplay videos on YouTube had been viewed more than 60 million times. The game attracted attention with its realistic setting inside a late-night convenience store, unsettling graphics, and shocking direction, sparking widespread discussion on social media.

First Look with Special Teaser Video

To coincide with the announcement, a special teaser video was made public. The clip draws inspiration from the game’s visual style. Set inside a convenience store with flickering fluorescent lights, the scene builds tension until a chime echoes through the air, amplifying anticipation for the upcoming film.

Director Jiro Nagae’s Statement

Nagae expressed his long-held wish to adapt the game: “I have wanted to make a live action version of The Convenience Store for years. I strongly believed I was the only one who could direct it, and that wish has finally been fulfilled. I confronted the horror elements thoroughly and pursued them to the end. The terrors unfolding in the midnight convenience store will surely surpass your imagination.”

Chilla’s Art Team on the Film Adaptation

The creators of Chilla’s Art also shared their reaction: “At last, The Convenience Store is becoming a movie. When we released the game in February 2020, we never imagined it would be adapted into a film. Back then, all we wanted was to release it quickly so people could play. Over time, many people played and embraced it. Now, it has become a film adaptation, which is deeply moving. We believe the movie will be enjoyable for those who played the game and those who have not. Please look forward to its release.”
