"‘Pokémon Observatory’ Exhibition Set to Open in November – In Collaboration with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan! Experience the Sun’s Magnetic Forces with Magnezone… An Exhibit to Dis

On the 7th, The Pokémon Company announced at a press conference held at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology that it will be hosting a special exhibition titled "Pokémon Observatory" in collaboration with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. This will be the first large-scale special exhibition by the Observatory, and it will begin touring museums across Japan starting November 1, with its debut at the Sagamihara City Museum. At the press conference, the special “Starlit Pikachu” was unveiled.

The exhibition offers a fun and engaging way to explore the mysteries of the universe—from the familiar Moon and Sun to distant galaxies—by drawing parallels with the unique traits and habitats of various Pokémon. Designed especially for elementary school children, the exhibit encourages a spirit of curiosity and discovery about the vast, unknown universe, much like setting off on an adventure in the world of Pokémon.

The exhibition will introduce the characteristics of the Sun, Moon, and celestial bodies both within and beyond the solar system by drawing comparisons with Pokémon. Visitors will be able to explore the universe as revealed through the history of astronomy and space science, using a rich array of images, videos, models, and materials—all presented through the lens of Pokémon.

Specifically, around ten models and balloons of space-related Pokémon such as Rayquaza and Deoxys will be on display. There will also be panels explaining Pokémon like Dusclops (Samayouru) as an analog to Jupiter due to their similar traits. Guests can experience the Sun’s magnetic field through Magneton and Magnezone, and there will be exhibits that delve into the origins of Pokémon and life on Earth, exploring questions like “Where do Pokémon come from?”

Astronomy is a field of study that seeks to uncover and solve the many mysteries of the vast universe. In the Pokémon game series, players embark on thrilling adventures filled with excitement and wonder as they encounter and discover unknown creatures called Pokémon. This spirit of curiosity and exploration closely mirrors the pursuit of knowledge in astronomy.

Many Pokémon are connected to space in various ways, and both celestial bodies and Pokémon undergo evolution and transformation. This strong thematic connection between Pokémon and astronomy is what inspired the creation of this special exhibition.

The exhibition is designed not only to inspire curiosity in astronomy, but also to ignite broader interest in scientific research among children. Ultimately, it seeks to contribute to the development of future talent in science and technology, while fostering greater appreciation and support for fundamental scientific research.
