Avex Turns a Profit in Anime & Visual Business for FY2025: 'Look Back' Film Drives Revenue Surge as AnimeTimes Expands Globally
Avex Inc. reported that its anime and visual business achieved sales of ¥16.118 billion, a 14.7% year-on-year increase, and an operating profit of ¥299 million for the fiscal year ending March 2025. This marks a turnaround from a ¥17 million loss in the previous fiscal year. The performance of this segment contrasts with the overall company’s results—Avex as a whole posted a year-on-year decline in both revenue and profit for the full fiscal year.
According to President and CEO Katsumi Kuroiwa, the increase in both revenue and operating profit was driven by the strong box office performance of an anime film.
While the company did not officially name the title, it is widely believed that the success of the anime film Look Back played a key role. The film has earned critical acclaim not only in Japan but also internationally. Notably, it drew 2.34 million viewers overseas, far surpassing the 1.2 million admissions in Japan.
TV Anime and Streaming Developments
Avex also revealed that the upcoming TV anime Gachiakuta, set to begin broadcasting in July 2025, has secured a major streaming deal with an overseas video distribution platform. The series will be available for simultaneous global streaming alongside its domestic broadcast.
Steady Growth for AnimeTimes
Avex’s video streaming service AnimeTimes was also highlighted. Over the past five years, the platform has expanded its catalog of new and legacy titles by a factor of 7.8. This growth has led to a steady increase in subscribers both in Japan and abroad.
Looking ahead, Avex plans to further enhance its anime content offering, with an emphasis on global markets. In addition to its current presence in India, the company aims to extend AnimeTimes to a broader range of regions worldwide.
