Oscar-Winning Animated Film Flow Surpasses 100,000 Viewers in Japan—Behind-the-Scenes Footage of Lead Cat Miut Released
The Academy Award-winning animated feature Flow has surpassed 100,000 viewers in Japan as of April 18, the 36th day since its March 14 release. To commemorate this milestone, a behind-the-scenes video has been unveiled, showing the adorable recording session of Miut, the real-life cat who voices the film’s protagonist.

A Wordless Tale Told Through Sound and Silence
Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, a Latvian creator known for his unique storytelling style, Flow marks his second full-length film. The story follows a black cat swept away by a flood, who ends up traveling aboard a boat with various animals. What makes the film especially unique is its lack of dialogue—none of the animals are anthropomorphized, and no spoken human language is used throughout.
Instead, each animal remains true to its natural behavior. The main cat character is voiced not by a human, but by Miut—the beloved pet of the film’s sound designer, Gulwal Kokh Galas.

Meet Miut: The Real Cat Behind the Performance
In the newly released footage, Miut can be seen curiously observing recording equipment, purring, meowing as if to communicate, and even scratching her claws. At times, she wanders near her owner’s feet, letting out short, indifferent meows as if unaware of the role she’s playing in cinematic history. It's a charming glimpse into how her authentic sounds were captured and incorporated into the film.
Audiences can now imagine where in the movie Miut’s natural “voice acting” was used—a subtle, immersive touch that enhances the emotional depth of the experience.
