Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, known for his stunning debut Away, which won the Contrechamp Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Flow marks his second feature film. Unlike his solo effort in Away, Flow was crafted over five and a half years with a dedicated team, reflecting Zilbalodis’ evolution as a creator.

A Story of Survival and Connection

Set in a world ravaged by a massive flood, Flow tells the tale of a lone cat who embarks on a perilous journey to survive. Boarding a drifting boat with other animals, the group faces unexpected challenges and danger. Through their shared struggles, they begin to form bonds of friendship, growing stronger together. The film explores themes of resilience, trust, and the power of unity.

Triumph Against Tough Competition

Flow clinched the Golden Globe by surpassing heavyweight contenders, including:

Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film to date
The Wild Island of Roz, nominated in four categories
Moana and the Legend of the Sea 2, a box office hit in Japan

A Director's Touching Speech

In his acceptance speech, Zilbalodis highlighted the unique journey behind the film:

“This movie was created by a small, passionate team in a place without a large film industry. For Latvian cinema, this is a first, and it means the world to us."

He further reflected on his personal growth:

“While my previous film was a solo effort, Flow taught me the importance of collaboration, trusting others, and overcoming differences—much like the cat in the story. In these times, we must not forget this lesson. Thank you for embracing this small cat’s tale."
