Tadanobu Asano Becomes First Japanese Actor to Win Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor with ‘SHOGUN’
Tadanobu Asano’s Historic Golden Globe Win
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards, held on January 5 (local time) at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, delivered a monumental moment for Japanese entertainment. Tadanobu Asano won Best Supporting Actor in a TV Drama for his role as the ambitious Kashiki Yabushige in FX’s hit series SHOGUN (streaming on Disney+ in Japan). This marks the first time a Japanese actor has claimed this award, solidifying Asano’s global recognition.
About ‘SHOGUN’: A Story of Feudal Japan
Adapted from the globally acclaimed 1975 novel set during Japan’s Sengoku period, SHOGUN portrays the story of a fictional warlord inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu, played by Hiroyuki Sanada. The series intricately weaves the warlord's relationship with a stranded English navigator as he seeks to unify a war-torn Japan.
Tadanobu Asano’s portrayal of Kashiwaya Shige, a complex and power-driven character, stood out as a powerful counterbalance to Sanada’s protagonist, earning him widespread acclaim.
A Masterpiece of Authenticity
SHOGUN’s commitment to authenticity, led by Sanada as both star and producer, shines through in its stunning costume design, intricate battle choreography, and vivid storytelling. The series emphasizes "real Japanese culture" while delivering epic action sequences that vividly depict the Sengoku era.
Despite most of its dialogue being in Japanese, the series achieved remarkable success, winning 18 Emmy Awards at the 76th Emmy Awards last September, setting a record for the most awards won by a single season. Its renewal for Seasons 2 and 3 has made it one of the most anticipated shows in television.
Japanese Talent Takes Center Stage
In addition to Asano’s groundbreaking win, Hiroyuki Sanada became the first Japanese actor to win Best Actor in a TV Drama, while Anna Sawai received a nomination for Best Actress for her role as Mariko. With three Japanese actors nominated in major categories, SHOGUN also earned a nod for Best TV Drama Series, marking four nominations in total.
