Under the supervision of director Mamoru Oshii himself, the immense task of scanning the original 35mm film and remastering it using the latest technology has begun, aiming to revive its beauty in 4K. The work, first released as an OVA in 1985, is a product of a collaboration between Oshii and Amano, both highly acclaimed creators representing Japan. Known for its beautiful visuals and an overwhelmingly unique world, it has generated a cult following and is recognized as a legendary work in the annals of anime history. Initially released as an OVA, it was also shown in theaters for a limited time to commemorate its release.

Synopsis of "Angel's Egg"

In a submerged city, a girl clings to an egg she believes to belong to an angel. A boy with a massive gun, who descends from a strange tank, is in search of the "bird" he saw in a dream. In the ruins of the city, a faint mutual understanding seems to arise between them, but one night, the boy ends up breaking the girl's egg.

Work Explanation

Released as an OVA in December 1985/Limited theatrical release.
Mamoru Oshii, a visionary known for overturning the norms of anime and cinema with each release, such as "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer," "GHOST IN THE SHELL/Ghost in the Shell," and "Innocence," collaborated with Yoshitaka Amano, now a globally recognized illustrator, to create a fantastical otherworld. The film is characterized by its almost monochrome color palette, minimal dialogue, unusually long takes, and a low number of cuts (about 400)—a third of the usual for animation. This austere style throughout the film reflects a theme underlying all of Oshii's works: skepticism towards self-existence. It is Oshii's first original work and a significant piece marking the beginning of his career as a creator.
