‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Season 2 Part 2 Unveils New PV: Jinshi’s True Identity Revealed, and Maomao Goes Missing!? OP by Mrs. GREEN APPLE

A new key visual and promotional video have been released for the second cour of Season 2 of the TV anime The Apothecary Diaries, which begins airing on April 4. The opening theme is “Kusushiki” by Mrs. GREEN APPLE, and the ending theme is “Hitorigoto” by Omoinotake.

In Episode 36, which aired today (March 28), Jinshi’s true identity was finally revealed. However, the dark clouds surrounding the inner palace remain as Season 2’s first cour comes to a close, leaving the question of why Jinshi's life is being targeted still unanswered.

A forbidden substance used for abortion has been smuggled into the inner palace hidden among foreign caravans. Malice and resentment rooted in the previous emperor’s reign continue to fester. Another attempt on Jinshi’s life has occurred. Finally, the source of the malevolence lurking in the palace, the emperor, and the consorts is brought to light.

Jinshi holds the key to unraveling this truth, but he must now face a new trial and make a crucial decision. Meanwhile, Maomao goes missing—!? What follows is a turbulent development that could shake the very foundations of the nation. All the past incidents begin to connect, and the poison that has quietly circulated within the palace at last reveals its true form. What truth awaits when it is finally exposed?

In the newly released key visual for the second cour, Maomao is shown being taken away through a snowstorm, her hands bound with rope. Despite the ominous atmosphere, her eyes are resolutely fixed forward, suggesting her unwavering spirit. Expectations are rising for what trials await her.

The Apothecary Diaries is a palace mystery drama following Maomao, a former apothecary who now works within the imperial court. With her deep knowledge of poisons and medicine, she solves a series of complex cases. Through Maomao’s deductions, viewers also learn about the hidden dangers and wonders of traditional medicine.

The series has surpassed 40 million copies in circulation. Season 1 aired from October 2023 to March 2024, followed by the first cour of Season 2 from January to March 2025.

Comment from Mrs. GREEN APPLE

We’re truly honored to be involved with The Apothecary Diaries, a series beloved not only in Japan but around the world. While thinking about what we could contribute to the series, we created the song “Kusushiki.”

The title “Kusushiki” is derived from the ancient Japanese word kusushiki, the origin of the word “medicine.” Medicine can both heal and harm. The term originally meant “mysterious” or “magical,” which inspired both the melody and lyrics. We infused our band’s sound with an oriental flair that fits the world of The Apothecary Diaries, and it was a new challenge for us as a band.

We wrote the song with the theme of “unchanging love that transcends lifetimes.” It’s a song full of dynamic development, but we hope each line can be enjoyed alongside the unfolding story. As the plot continues to heat up, we hope you enjoy it together with our music.

Comment from Omoinotake

The ending theme accompanies some of the story’s most important scenes. With each episode pointing emotions in a different direction, we asked ourselves what kind of song would best fit that role. While we can’t say too much just yet, that question guided our entire creative process.

As the story progresses, we believe this song—“Hitorigoto”—will take on new meanings. While The Apothecary Diaries and our modern world differ in values and views on life and death, we tried to craft a song with a timeless message. In a world filled with sadness, we hope to share even a sliver of hope with you.
