Yutaka Izubuchi & Ryusuke Hikawa React to Hideaki Anno’s Script for ‘G-QuuuuuuX’: “We Didn’t Expect This Much”

On the 22nd, directors Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi, along with anime and tokusatsu researcher Ryusuke Hikawa, attended the “Anime New Century Declaration” 44th Anniversary Talk Show and ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ selection screening event in Tokyo. The event was held to celebrate the success of the theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, the latest installment in the Gundam series.

Hideaki Anno’s Scriptwriting Contributions Spark Reactions

While G-QuuuuuuX is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, the opening portion of the film was scripted by Hideaki Anno. His writing style adapts the distinctive dialogue patterns of Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, offering a unique take on classic Gundam phrasing. Anno, however, revealed that he wasn’t heavily involved beyond the opening segment, saying,
"I gave some feedback and corrections when the script was finalized."

In response, Izubuchi playfully interjected,
"If you’re the one making corrections, what are we supposed to do?"

Anno also noted that his feedback was frequently rejected, saying,
"I pushed hard for some changes recently, but they were completely shot down. I thought they were good ideas, though…"

This remark drew laughter from the audience.

Why Didn’t Anno Direct ‘G-QuuuuuuX’?

alled a previous conversation with Anno, where he asked why Anno didn’t take on the role of director himself. According to Anno,
"I was satisfied. I’ve done enough."

Izubuchi admitted that at the time, he didn’t understand Anno’s reasoning, but after watching the completed film, he realized,
"He had already accomplished everything he wanted to do."

Anno reaffirmed,
"I did what I could to assist. My role was just to help out."

Hikawa, who has often viewed Anno’s works in early production phases, shared his unique experience of watching a Tsurumaki-directed film as a completed product.
"I was completely caught off guard! Usually, I’m used to being surprised by Anno’s opening sequences, but this time, I finally got to experience that shock as a first-time viewer."

Reflecting on G-QuuuuuuX, he humorously described the experience as a three-stage process:

“Wait, I wasn’t told about this!”
“What’s going on here?”
“How far is this going?”

Izubuchi, who also contributed to the project, couldn’t help but laugh, saying,
"I didn’t expect it to go this far."

Anime New Century Declaration

On February 22, 1981, just before the theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam, an event was held in front of Alta Plaza at Shinjuku Station’s east exit. Legendary Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino and others addressed the crowd, proclaiming, “We declare the dawn of a new century of anime, shaped by the possibilities of animation.”
