Yutaka Izubuchi Casually Reveals New 'Patlabor' Anime, Episode 1 Recording Complete

On the 22nd, directors Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi, along with anime and tokusatsu researcher Ryusuke Hikawa, attended the “Anime New Century Declaration” 44th Anniversary Talk Show and ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ selection screening event in Tokyo. The event was held to celebrate the success of the theatrical release of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, the latest installment in the Gundam series.

The screening featured three classic episodes: Episode 1, “Gundam Rises,” Episode 2, “Destroy Gundam,” and Episode 14, “Time, Be Still.” At the end of the event, director Anno shared his deep connection to Mobile Suit Gundam, recalling how the preview for the first episode captivated him and led him to watch the series. “This is the anime that brought me back to animation, so I feel indebted to it. I'm glad I can support it in my own way,” he said. However, since Anno contributed to writing the opening part of GQuuuuuuX, both Izubuchi and Hikawa jokingly remarked, “That’s not exactly ‘behind the scenes.’”

When Izubuchi asked if Anno felt he had done everything he wanted with Gundam, Anno responded, “Gundam is fine. But there’s also Space Battleship Yamato, so please look forward to that.” This remark was a subtle nod to Studio Khara’s upcoming Space Battleship Yamato anime project. In response, Izubuchi also made a casual but surprising announcement: “There’s also Patlabor. We just finished recording Episode 1 the other day.” This unexpected revelation about a new installment in the Mobile Police Patlabor series delighted fans in attendance.
