"Oshi no Ko" Wins Net Buzzword 100 Annual Grand Prize, "Satsuma Hogwarts" Takes Net New Word Award
The Net Buzzword 100 Annual Grand Prize for 2023 was held online on the 13th, recognizing the most popular internet terms of the year. The grand prize was awarded to "Oshi no Ko," a manga that also gained attention with its TV anime adaptation.
"Oshi no Ko" is a story based in the entertainment industry, serialized in "Weekly Young Jump" (Shueisha) since April 2020. The protagonist, Goro, a working obstetrician, meets his favorite idol, Ai Hoshino, but following a certain event, the deceased Goro is reincarnated as Ai's child. This marks the beginning of his journey in the entertainment world alongside her.
As a popular work with over 15 million copies in circulation, the anime adaptation started in April 2023, and its first episode topped the global trends on X (formerly Twitter). The series sparked a rise in secondary creations, including cover videos and TikTok dance videos of YOASOBI's hit theme song "Idol," generating significant buzz.
The Net Buzzword 100, started in 2018, is a project organized by two online dictionaries – "Niconico Encyclopedia" and "Pixiv Encyclopedia" – that encompass a wide range of new terms and buzzwords on the internet. This year marked its sixth iteration.
The term "100" signifies a comprehensive review of the year's internet trends, from number 1 to 100, as reflected by these two services. In addition to the annual grand prize, special awards like the "Niconico Award" and "Pixiv Award" were also selected.
For 2023, the "Net New Word Award" went to "Satsuma Hogwarts". The grand prize "Oshi no Ko" was commended for its wide-reaching impact on the internet world in 2023, as evident by the combination of phrases and melodies from its theme song and other popular media that trended on social networks.
Creator Akasaka Aka and artist Mengo Yokoyari expressed their gratitude for the recognition. Akasaka noted that working closely with Yokoyari, they developed "Oshi no Ko" under a joint name, marking a significant achievement beyond their individual works. Yokoyari expressed surprise and gratitude for the unexpected success, acknowledging that it was a collaborative effort with Akasaka's talent that brought them to this stage.
