Fuji TV's New CEO Kenji Shimizu, a Veteran Anime Producer, Sparks Hope for Anime Revival

On January 27, Fuji TV held a press conference addressing a series of controversies involving Masahiro Nakai and allegations of employee misconduct. During the event, it was announced that President Koichi Minato and Chairman Shuji Kano would step down, with Executive Vice President Kenji Shimizu, known for his background in anime production, assuming the role of the new CEO.

Over the years, Fuji TV has placed increasing emphasis on anime programming, and Shimizu’s appointment has sparked online speculation, with comments such as, “Will Fuji TV become an anime-focused channel?” and “It seems like they’ll put more effort into anime.”

Kenji Shimizu is celebrated for his work as a producer and planner on iconic titles like Dr. Slump Arale-chan, Dragon Ball, Chibi Maruko-chan, GeGeGe no Kitaro, Yu Yu Hakusho, Midori no Makibao, and KochiKame.

Shimizu’s extensive experience in anime has led to comments such as, “With Shimizu as CEO, they should focus even more on anime. Maybe even bring anime back to Golden Time slots!” and “Shimizu’s name was always in the credits of Fuji TV’s anime. Now, the CEO has shifted from variety to anime!”

However, some voices of concern have emerged, stating, “While it’s great to see an anime veteran as CEO, this transition might associate anime with the recent controversies,” and, “The man behind the 1990s golden era of Fuji TV anime is stepping into leadership during challenging times.”

In recent years, Fuji TV has taken significant steps to support anime. The network announced last December that it would make major changes to its late-night anime block, Noitamina, starting in April 2025. Established in 2005, Noitamina has traditionally aired in the late-night slot after midnight. For its 20th anniversary, the block will shift to the earlier time of 11:00 PM every Thursday.

This marks the first time in its 20-year history that the block will air before midnight. The first anime to premiere in this new slot will be Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de (The After-Dinner Mysteries). With Shimizu’s appointment, expectations are high that Fuji TV’s commitment to anime will only strengthen further.
