[Editor’s Picks] CyberAgent’s Ambition: Launch of a New Anime Studio and M&A Expansion

On January 10, 2025, CyberAgent announced the launch of a new anime production studio, CA Soa Inc. (pronounced "CA Soar"). Renowned anime producer Masakazu Ogawa has been appointed as the studio’s president. The studio will collaborate with CygamesPictures, a CyberAgent group company, to enhance its anime production capabilities.

Full-Scale Entry into Anime Production

In 2017, CyberAgent, in partnership with Cygames, launched the "CA-Cygames Anime Fund," marking its active investment in anime IPs. Since February 2024, the company has consolidated IP development, anime production, advertising, and merchandise creation under its Anime & IP Division.

CA Soa aims to produce globally acclaimed, high-quality anime by combining Ogawa’s production expertise with advanced technologies, striving to pioneer innovative production methods.

CyberAgent's Unique Presence in Japan's Content Market

As a household name in Japan, CyberAgent initially found success as a web advertising agency during the early internet era. It has maintained 27 consecutive years of revenue growth since its founding, consistently succeeding in new ventures.

One standout achievement is ABEMA, launched under the bold leadership of CEO Susumu Fujita. Despite skepticism about large-scale investments in internet broadcasting, ABEMA achieved profitability and grew with a focus on anime content. The platform offers unique viewing experiences, including early streaming rights for anime ahead of terrestrial TV broadcasts, supported by Cygames' strong profitability.

Strengthening Production Base with Nitroplus Acquisition

CyberAgent's commitment to anime extends beyond distribution to strengthening its production foundation. A prime example is its acquisition of Nitroplus in January 2024.

Nitroplus, known for hit IPs like Touken Ranbu and Steins;Gate, also boasts contributions from its vice president Gen Urobuchi, the acclaimed writer behind Fate/Zero and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Nitroplus, which previously declined M&A offers, approached CyberAgent, signaling a major industry shift.

This merger is expected to amplify CyberAgent’s capacity to create blockbuster anime hits.

CyberAgent’s Push into Global Markets

While dominating the domestic market, CyberAgent faces challenges in the global arena. Its reputation as Japan’s leading web advertising agency hasn't translated into significant international recognition. Additionally, ABEMA’s content remains largely Japan-focused, limiting its global appeal.

However, anime remains a field where Japan holds strong global competitiveness. Through CA Soa and the anime fund, CyberAgent plans to secure original IPs and expand into international markets.

CEO Fujita has already begun planning for his successor, making CyberAgent’s future strategies a focal point for both domestic and global media industries.
