Oshi no Ko: Ai Graces the Cover of SPUR with a Sophisticated New Look
Ai, a beloved character from the manga Oshi no Ko by Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari (published by Shueisha), will appear on the cover of the February 2025 issue of the fashion magazine SPUR. Wearing Valentino’s Resort Collection, Ai strikes her signature pose with both hands forming peace signs, blending her idol roots with a modern, chic sensibility.
This marks SPUR’s second collaboration with Oshi no Ko, following the August 2023 issue featuring Ruby and Aqua Hoshino in a jewel-adorned, elegant cover.
A "What-If" Story: Ai’s Career Beyond Idoldom
Themed around Ai’s hypothetical life after her idol career, this issue showcases a more refined and mature version of her. In contrast to her vibrant on-stage persona, Ai exudes a calm sophistication in this exclusive artwork.
The magazine also includes additional illustrations of Ai in different outfits, as well as an in-depth interview with Mengo Yokoyari. Reflecting on the four-and-a-half-year journey of Oshi no Ko, Yokoyari discusses the challenges and joys of creating the series, offering a rare glimpse into her mindset during the manga’s run and conclusion.
The feature further highlights Oshi no Ko’s cultural impact, with creators from various fields sharing their admiration for the series. Exclusive to SPUR, this edition includes luxurious original illustrations of Ai and an insightful interview with Yokoyari.
Comment from Mengo Yokoyari
“During Ai’s brief but brilliant career in the entertainment industry, I don’t think she ever had the chance to appear as a celebrity at a fashion show. That’s why I wanted to explore this theme of Ai engaging in sophisticated work after her idol career slowed down.
In SPUR, former idols often appear with a chic vibe that contrasts with their usual image, and it’s exciting to see a new side of them. I tried to capture that same feeling by imagining how Ai might look in such a scenario. I felt like I got to meet a grown-up version of her, and I hope fans will enjoy seeing this new side of Ai as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
