USJ’s ‘Donkey Kong Country’ Pre-Opening Celebration: Donkey Kong Appears, Shigeru Miyamoto Calls It “Truly Moving” in Historic Photo Opportunity
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka held a grand pre-opening celebration on December 10 for the expansion of its Super Nintendo World with the new Donkey Kong Country area. Nintendo's legendary creative fellow Shigeru Miyamoto and actress Haruka Fukuhara joined the festivities, celebrating the launch with infectious enthusiasm.
Super Nintendo World, which debuted in March 2021, features beloved characters like Mario in an immersive environment. With the addition of Donkey Kong Country, the area has expanded by 70%, and this highly anticipated second phase officially opens tomorrow, December 10, as a world-first.
Donkey Kong Country: A Jungle Adventure Brought to Life
This lush, vibrant area is inspired by the world of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong and his friends. Iconic features include the towering Golden Temple and the exhilarating ride attraction Donkey Kong’s Crazy Minecart, where guests leap over barrels, race along rickety tracks, and dodge obstacles in a thrilling jungle escapade.
Visitors can also explore Donkey Kong’s House for a meet-and-greet experience. Other interactive attractions include Rambi’s Jungle Conga, a rhythm game where players drum to summon the animal friend Rambi. Themed dining and shops round out the experience, featuring treats like the barrel-inspired Jungle Beat Shake and the quirky Funky Kong’s Flying & Buy, where Funky Kong serves as the shopkeeper.
Pre-Opening Celebration Highlights
The event kicked off with a vibrant performance by dancers before Donkey Kong himself made a grand appearance. The beloved character displayed his iconic moves, raising his arms and letting out a powerful roar, captivating the crowd. He was joined by Universal Destinations & Experiences Chairman and CEO Mark Woodbury and USJ President and CEO J.L. Bonnier.
Later, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Donkey Kong, and Haruka Fukuhara emerged from the jungle. The two enthusiastically celebrated with fist pumps and dances, creating unforgettable moments. Highlights included a historic "parent-and-child" photo of Miyamoto and Donkey Kong, as well as a charming height-difference snapshot featuring Donkey Kong and Fukuhara.
Miyamoto Reflects on Donkey Kong’s Legacy
Looking back on the origins of the Donkey Kong game and the launch of Super Nintendo World, Miyamoto expressed pride and excitement about the new Donkey Kong Country area:
“We’ve prepared thoroughly for this moment. The world of Donkey Kong has finally come to life here at Universal Studios Japan. I am truly moved,” he said, extending heartfelt gratitude to the USJ team for their exceptional partnership.
