"Hikaru no Go" Set for First Stage Adaptation in July; Cast Announced with Yojiro Itokawa as Hikaru Shindo

The manga "Hikaru no Go" is set to be adapted into a stage play for the first time. Titled "Song Picture Scroll 'Hikaru no Go' The First Move," the play will be performed from July 5th to July 14th, 2024, at the Sunshine Theater, with the staff and cast information now released.

The direction and script will be handled by Hiroshi Moriwaki, known for his work on popular productions such as the musical "Black Butler," the stage plays "Durarara!!," "Fruits Basket," and the Kamen Rider series. The choreography and staging are by Shinnosuke Motoyama, who has worked on musicals like "Black Butler," "Touken Ranbu," and "The Prince of Tennis." The music is composed by Shunsuke Wada, who has been involved in numerous projects such as the Hyper Projection Play "Haikyuu!!" series, Tokyo One Piece Tower, and "Bakuman." THE STAGE. The stage art is by Mitsuyo Akiyama, who has designed sets for hits like "Touken Ranbu" and "Yowamushi Pedal."

The cast includes Yojiro Itokawa as Hikaru Shindo, Koji Kominami as Sai Fujiwara, Akito Akasawa as Akira Toya, Teru Ikuta as Akari Fujisaki, and Akio Hirose as Koyo Toya. Additional cast members will be announced later. Ticket pre-sales have begun, with prices set at 12,000 yen for SS seats (including benefits and within the first three rows), 10,000 yen for S seats (with benefits), and 8,000 yen for A seats (with benefits).

"Hikaru no Go" is based on the manga serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) from 1999 to 2003, centering on the game of Go. The story follows Hikaru Shindo, who becomes obsessed with the world of Go after being possessed by the spirit of a genius Go player, depicting his growth as he aims for "the hand of God." The series was also adapted into a television anime from 2001 to 2003.
