■Official Profile
A modern-day yokai who used to rampage all over the country. Now, her powers remain inside Okarun, while her consciousness resides in a lucky cat statue, moving around at will.

■Turbo Granny Overview
Turbo Granny is a modern yokai that resides in an abandoned tunnel in Shonou City. She has the ability to run at speeds of up to 100 km/h and curse anyone she catches.

She typically appears as a small elderly woman with messy white hair, red skin, and large, bulging white eyes. However, she can freely transform her appearance, such as enlarging her face to block the tunnel or morphing into a snake-like visage with exposed fangs.

When Okarun, who didn’t believe in ghosts, was provoked by Momo to visit the tunnel, he fled in terror. Turbo Granny chased him down, possessed him, and stole his "manhood" and golden orb.

Turbo Granny has the ability to transform the appearance of those she curses, but Okarun is able to maintain his human form thanks to Momo’s psychic powers, which suppress the curse.

During a rematch with Momo and Okarun, Turbo Granny sets up a situation in which she is certain to win. However, when Momo taunts her by saying, “Are you afraid of losing a race?” she agrees to a game of tag. Despite merging with a ground-bound spirit to corner the two, Turbo Granny is once again defeated by the combined efforts of Seiko, her talismans, and Momo’s psychokinesis.

It was thought that Turbo Granny had been incinerated in this encounter, but she managed to survive by hiding within Okarun’s body. Meanwhile, Okarun realizes that his golden orb has not yet been returned. Later, Seiko uses her harisen (paper fan) to exorcise Turbo Granny, transferring her consciousness into a maneki-neko (lucky cat figurine) prepared as a vessel for the curse.

At this point, Turbo Granny discovers that all her powers have been transferred to Okarun. Resigned to her weakened state, she agrees to cooperate with Momo and Okarun in exchange for their help in recovering her lost power, continuing to assist them in the form of a maneki-neko.

Despite her haughty demeanor, Turbo Granny supports Momo and Okarun with her vast knowledge and sharp, practical advice, proving to be an invaluable ally.

Turbo Granny’s Backstory

Turbo Granny is a modern yokai that inhabits an abandoned tunnel. The exact reason she chose this tunnel as her base of operations remains unclear. However, according to Seiko, the tunnel was once the site of a "serial murder case targeting young girls," and the spirits of these victims lingered as bound ghosts (jibakurei), unable to move on. Turbo Granny is said to have offered solace to these restless spirits, acting as a companion and comforter for their unresolved grievances.

As her name suggests, Turbo Granny possesses extraordinary speed and strength. She can move at speeds of up to 100 km/h, maintaining her pace even on sharp curves. In addition, she has the ability to possess others, completely controlling their actions.

Early in the story, Turbo Granny possesses the protagonist, Okarun, putting him in a perilous state. With Seiko Ayase’s intervention, Okarun is rescued, and Turbo Granny is successfully sealed. Later, she amplifies her power by merging with ground-bound spirits, becoming an even greater threat.

One of Turbo Granny’s most formidable displays of power occurs when she uses her immense spiritual energy to gather ground-bound spirits, summoning a massive entity known as the "Ghost Crab." This giant crab-like creature is a fusion of countless restless souls responding to Turbo Granny’s curse. Its enormous size and power bring Okarun and Momo to the brink of defeat.

However, after being defeated through the combined efforts of Seiko and Momo, Turbo Granny loses her physical strength. Her abilities are left behind in Okarun’s body, leaving her powerless and reliant on her new form as a maneki-neko.

In Dandadan, Turbo Granny is sealed into the form of a maneki-neko (beckoning cat statue), and her adorable appearance has gained her a reputation among fans as “cute.”

Turbo Granny initially possesses the protagonist, Okarun, cursing him and stealing his "important part." To counter this, Momo Ayase and Seiko Ayase, a spiritual medium, track down Turbo Granny and attempt to seal her using Seiko’s warding techniques. Ultimately, Turbo Granny’s consciousness is sealed inside a maneki-neko, while her spiritual power is left behind in Okarun.

As a maneki-neko, Turbo Granny no longer possesses her former strength, but she acts as an advisor to Okarun and his friends. She occasionally provides them with guidance and assistance, playing a key role in their battles against supernatural threats.

In the anime, Turbo Granny’s maneki-neko form is humorously highlighted in the ending sequence, making it a must-see for fans.

Turbo Granny stole Okarun’s golden ball because of the powerful life force it contains. She aimed to harness this energy, which is crucial for reviving spirits and yokai.

The golden orb isn’t just coveted by Turbo Granny—it is also targeted by other supernatural entities, UMA (Unidentified Mysterious Animals), and aliens, making it a recurring source of conflict and preventing it from easily returning to Okarun.

Turbo Granny and Seiko's Relationship

Early in the story, Turbo Granny possesses Okarun (Ken Takakura), putting him in a dangerous situation. At this point, Seiko uses her skills as a spiritual medium to separate Turbo Granny from Okarun and successfully seals her away. During this phase, Seiko and Turbo Granny are clearly in an antagonistic relationship.

Later, however, Seiko invites Turbo Granny into her home, and they begin living together. Seiko frequently cooks for Turbo Granny, gradually winning her over through her cooking. Over time, the two develop a close friendship, even fighting together as allies and coming to trust each other.

Today, Seiko and Turbo Granny share a relationship akin to that of family. In particular, the bonus episodes included at the end of the manga volumes showcase their everyday interactions, which have been well-received by readers for their heartwarming and humorous dynamic.
