The director of the anime’s second season, Shota Goshozono, also shared an illustration and message celebrating the conclusion. In his comment, he said, “What must it be like to draw a weekly manga for 6 and a half years? How difficult must it have been? Now Jujutsu Kaisen has come to an end. Akutami-sensei, you’ve worked incredibly hard.”
Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018, and the story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he is drawn into a world of battles against curses after the seal of a powerful cursed object is broken.
The manga has now surpassed 100 million copies in circulation. The TV anime, which aired from October 2020 to March 2021, gained immense popularity, followed by the release of a feature film in December 2021. The second season aired from July to December 2023, and it has been announced that the sequel arc, Jujutsu Kaisen: Culling Game, is set to be produced.

When I first entered the anime industry, I thought, ‘Maybe I have some talent for this.’ But after about a year, I hit a wall and quit. Shortly after, Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization. The series was packed with things I grew up watching, and I realized the author was of the same generation as me. There’s a saying that if you eat the arm of someone who can draw well, you’ll gain their ability. Yuji eats a finger to get stronger. But I didn’t have the guts or wisdom to go that far.
Fortunately, thanks to social media, I was able to return to anime work as a key animator. One day, while I was at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant with a friend, they got a message asking to work on the key animation for Jujutsu Kaisen. I asked them to respond with, ‘I love this manga, so let me do it!’ That’s how I became involved with the anime. The first season was directed by Park-san.
I hesitated at first because the job seemed tough, but I was offered my first storyboard and directing work. At the time, I never imagined I’d become the director of season two. Directing was a tough job.
While working on Jujutsu Kaisen, I often thought about Akutami-sensei’s workload. Even just the sheer volume of it is hard to comprehend. What must it be like to draw a weekly manga for 6 and a half years? How difficult must it have been? Now Jujutsu Kaisen has come to an end. Akutami-sensei, you’ve worked incredibly hard.
