[Look Back Author Cries] 'Chainsaw Man' Author Brought to Tears by Success of 'Look Back': "I May Never Have Something Made with Such Sincerity Again in My Life"
With the success of the animated film "Look Back" (released on June 28), a thank-you comment from the original author, Tatsuki Fujimoto, has been received. Alongside this, new scene cuts have been released.
The film attracted 360,000 viewers and grossed 600 million yen within the first 10 days of its release. Regarding the response, the film's public relations representative explained, "On social media, there are constant praises such as 'I couldn't stop crying throughout the screening, and even thinking back on it makes me cry,' 'The pinnacle of modern animation,' 'Not a single wasted scene,' 'Incredible respect for the original work,' and 'The reason for the film adaptation is in the movie itself,' and word-of-mouth continues to spread."
Reacting to the hit, Fujimoto commented, "There's an expression like 'bringing characters to life,' and it really felt like I was watching a world where Fujino and Kyomoto were alive through a camera. The animation and the voice actors' performances were so natural and wonderful. I cried, thinking I might never again experience my work being created so sincerely in my life."
He also expressed his gratitude, saying, "There are so many surprises and discoveries in the 58 minutes that I can't even pick out each one to praise. It became a truly wonderful work thanks to the involvement of many people, and I want to thank everyone. Thank you very much!"
The newly released scene cuts capture moments like Fujino, who has absolute confidence in her drawing skills after receiving praise from her classmates, being shocked by seeing Kyomoto's drawings, and the exhilarated Fujino, despite being soaked in the rain, continuing to draw after Kyomoto, whom she felt couldn't match her drawing skills, told her, "I've always been a fan."
"Look Back," by "Chainsaw Man" author Tatsuki Fujimoto, is a growth story through manga of Fujino, a fourth-grade student, and her truant classmate Kyomoto, culminating in a life-shattering event. The youth story begins when their four-panel manga is published in the school newspaper and continues to follow their lives through middle and high school.
When it was published as a 143-page one-shot on "Shonen Jump+" on July 19, 2021, it received a huge response, with comments like "He's a genius" and "Too shocking for words," recording over 2.5 million views on the first day. It was selected as the top work in the male category of "This Manga is Amazing! 2022" and was nominated for the "Manga Taisho 2022." The film stars Yumi Kawai and Mitsuki Yoshida.
