Someone Hertz Surpasses 500,000 Copies as KochiKame Creator Says, “I Wish I Had a Youth Like This”

Someone Hertz will surpass 500,000 copies in circulation with the release of its fourth volume on August 4. To celebrate the new volume, its obi features a recommendation from Osamu Akimoto, creator of KochiKame, along with an illustration of Ryotsu holding a radio and a postcard.

KochiKame Creator Osamu Akimoto Praises Someone Hertz

Commenting on the Weekly Shonen Jump romantic comedy, Akimoto said:

“I find it comforting every week. The combination of a postcard contributor and a romantic comedy should be impossible. I used radio themed stories several times in KochiKame, but I never imagined a romance between postcard contributors. Everything Kurage does and says is simply too adorable. As someone who submitted postcards to radio programs during my school days, I wish I had experienced a youth like this.”

Kurage Mizuo, the heroine of Someone Hertz, will also appear on the cover and an enclosed postcard in the autumn 2026 issue of kotoba, Shueisha’s journal dedicated to exploring diversity. The issue, which goes on sale September 4 and focuses on radio, will also feature an interview with Yamano.

A Youthful Romantic Comedy Built Around Late Night Radio

Someone Hertz began serialization in issue 42 of Weekly Shonen Jump, released on September 16, 2025.

The youth radio romantic comedy follows Mimei, a serious high school boy, as he gradually grows closer to Kurage, an easygoing female classmate, through their shared interest in late night radio.

The manga depicts their exchanges as comic and straight man, along with their relaxed everyday lives, at a comfortable pace.

Creator Profile: Ei Yamano

In 2022, Ei Yamano received a runner up award and the Supernova Award at the 56th JUMP New World Manga Award for the radio themed one shot Friday Midnight Talking.

The work was published on the Shonen Jump Plus manga app in January 2022, marking Yamano’s debut as a one shot manga creator. After publishing several more one shots, Yamano launched the first serialized work, Someone Hertz, which was based on the debut story, in issue 42 of Weekly Shonen Jump on September 16, 2025.
