Toei Animation Marks 70th Anniversary After 247 TV and 278 Theatrical Productions

Toei Animation celebrated its 70th anniversary on July 31 and announced a series of commemorative initiatives. These include a new anniversary logo and slogan, commemorative advertisements, a special video, and a dedicated website. To date, Toei Animation has produced 247 television anime titles and 278 theatrical anime productions, as well as numerous television specials. The figures are current as of March 31, 2026.

Founded in 1956 as Japan’s first full scale animation production company, Toei Animation produced the groundbreaking full color animated feature film The White Snake Enchantress (白蛇伝, Hakuja-Den) in 1958.

Since then, the company has continued to produce animation almost every year while actively expanding its licensing, video, and other related businesses. As a pioneer across multiple areas of the animation industry, the company has played a leading role in its development.

Beyond its productions, the animation business pioneered by Toei Animation has expanded significantly overseas. In recent years, the sector has grown to the point where it is regarded as one of Japan’s core industries.

Regarding the anniversary initiatives, the company said:

Anniversary Logo and Slogan

To mark the anniversary, Toei Animation has created a commemorative logo and adopted the slogan “Love for Anime, Dreams for the World.”

The logo and slogan express a love of anime that connects people from diverse backgrounds. They also reflect the company’s pride in and appreciation for its history, along with its commitment to embracing new challenges, achieving further global growth, and opening up new possibilities for the future.

Toei Animation Day Established

July 31, the company’s founding date, has been officially recognized as “Toei Animation Day” by the Japan Anniversary Association.

The date was selected because the company was established as Toei Doga Co., Ltd. on July 31, 1956. Its corporate name was changed to Toei Animation Co., Ltd. in 1998, and the company has continued to operate under that name ever since.

Over the 70 years since its establishment, Toei Animation has been supported by many people, while countless others have engaged with its anime in one form or another.

“Toei Animation Day” was established in the hope that it would help generate even greater excitement throughout the wider animation community and allow everyone connected to animation to continue enjoying it.

70th Anniversary Special Movie Released

A special movie commemorating Toei Animation’s 70th anniversary was released on July 31.

As of March 31, 2026, the company had brought 247 television anime productions, 278 theatrical anime productions, and numerous television specials to audiences.

The video conveys respect for these many productions, gratitude for the past 70 years, and the company’s desire to continue sharing the joy of animation under the message “Love for Anime, Dreams for the World.”

70th Anniversary Website Opens

A dedicated website has opened to commemorate the 70th anniversary. Further initiatives related to the anniversary will be announced through the website.

Commemorative Advertisements Unveiled

A commemorative advertisement has appeared at the Toei Animation Museum, which is located alongside the company’s studio in Oizumi Gakuen. It is displayed as a banner at the museum shop.

The museum will also offer a variety of anniversary attractions, including a photo spot and an augmented reality photo frame.

In Nakano, where Toei Animation’s headquarters is located, a large banner will be displayed across the central window frames on the front of Nakano Sunplaza. A library showcasing productions created by the company over the past 70 years will also appear along the temporary construction fencing.

Additional Anniversary Projects

Toei Video will release Blu ray editions of five animated feature films to commemorate the anniversary, including The Adventure of Little Samurai and The Enchanted Monkey.

Gakken Inc. is also planning a report manga series examining how Toei Animation’s anime productions were created. The series will feature interviews with people involved in each production.
