Overview

His real name is Ryu Tadera (JP: 田寺 リュウ).

Although he worked as a traveling merchant delivering goods from the outside world to Higashimura, his true identity is a “Tsugai Komono” a support role tied to the isolated village. While he does not currently have a Tsugai, he possesses the rare ability to see them. He eventually takes Yuru and escapes with him to the outside world.
His personality is elusive and carefree, making him difficult to fully grasp.

Higashimura is protected by a barrier and cannot be easily accessed. Dera is one of the few individuals who can freely enter and exit the village, thanks to a method passed down through the Tadera family for generations.

It is estimated that he is around 35 years old, based on his surprise upon learning that his father had a 13 year old hidden child, creating a 22 year age gap.

A “Tsugai Komono” refers to a role that supports Higashimura, which is isolated from the outside world.

■Appearance
At first, he disguised himself as a mustached traveling merchant, but later shaved his beard to change his appearance and conceal his identity.

■Personality
He takes care of Yuru in many ways, teaching him how to navigate modern society and even taking him on trips around the Tokyo metropolitan area for social learning.

He has a playful and somewhat irresponsible side, even becoming deeply involved in horse racing and suffering major losses.

Ten years ago, he was called back by his father Roei Tadera to inherit the family business. Before that, he worked overseas as a mercenary. His carefree attitude toward money stems from his battlefield experience and the belief that one should spend all their money before dying.

Background

The person who helped Yuru and Asa’s parents escape Higashimura was actually Dera’s father, Roei Tadera (田寺ロウエイ).

After leaving, Roei reportedly remarried an Ethiopian woman. It was later revealed that Dera had half siblings he never knew about, and that his father was still alive. This discovery highlights how deeply his father was involved in the origins of the story.

Dera can naturally see Tsugai, indicating that he once had a contract with one. However, he currently has no contracted Tsugai. While the Tadera family possesses Tsugai, they are not bound to him personally.

This is tied to his past. During his time as a mercenary, his contracted Tsugai was destroyed while protecting him in battle. The emotional impact of this event has lingered, and he has not formed a new contract for over ten years.

Abilities

■As a Mercenary
He has a background as a mercenary and is skilled in handling a wide range of weapons, including pistols, rifles, and grenades. Using these, he is able to overpower Tsugai and their users.

A large stockpile of these weapons is kept in the Tadera family’s hidden dwelling, known as a Mayoiga(迷い家).

■Tsugai
Although he once had a contracted Tsugai, he currently does not possess one.

■Yuru

Dera has known Yuru since the time he disguised himself as a traveling merchant and frequently visited Higashimura. After the village was attacked, he became Yuru’s guardian in the outside world.

To avoid drawing attention, he outwardly remarried Hana Danno and presents Yuru as his stepchild. They live together in the same apartment.

At first, Yuru does not fully trust him, recognizing him as someone connected to Higashimura, despite seeing him as a good person. However, as Dera’s mindset changes, Yuru gradually begins to trust him more.

Role in the Story

Members connected to Higashimura attempt to kill Yuru once in order to grant him the power of “Seal” and seize control of the world.

However, Dera opposes sacrificing a child for such a goal. Acting on his own judgment, he hides Yuru in his apartment, which serves as his base.

As a result, he is branded a traitor by other operatives who, like Tsugai Komono, carry out secret missions for the village. Nevertheless, for Yuru, he becomes one of the few adults he can rely on and ultimately acts as his guardian.

Trivia

■Name Origin
The worldbuilding of Daemons of the Shadow Realm draws inspiration from Japanese folklore, including “The Legends of Tono,” which features a place called Dendera Field.

This location is associated with the legend of abandoning the elderly. The kanji of his surname “田寺, Tadera” can also be read as “Dendera” in Japanese, linking his name to this reference.
