Daemons of the Shadow Realm (Yomi no Tsugai) is the latest work by Hiromu Arakawa, best known for the internationally acclaimed masterpiece Fullmetal Alchemist, which continues to enjoy strong support both in Japan and overseas. The original manga is currently serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan.

The anime adaptation brings together the same powerful production team behind the Fullmetal Alchemist anime series, which aired and was released between 2003 and 2011. It is produced through the collaboration of Square Enix, Aniplex, and BONES.

Overview

Asa is a mysterious girl who attacks Higashimura Village alongside a special forces unit. She claims to be the real Asa and Yuru’s true younger sister. Yuru had believed that his sister had been confined in a village cage due to her “duty,” but Asa reveals that the girl in the cage was a fake prepared by the village elders to keep Yuru from leaving.

Her blood relation to Yuru has already been confirmed through the keen sense of smell of Left and Right, making it certain that they are siblings.

Appearance and Personality

■Appearance
She is characterized by her long black hair and eyepatch. Her physique is not significantly different from the cautious Yuru, and she is 16 years old.

Although her height is similar to Yuru’s, this is attributed to her access to a modern, nutrient rich diet outside the village. In contrast, the fake Asa’s shorter stature is presumed to be due to malnutrition.

■Personality
She harbors deep hatred toward Higashimura Village and shows no mercy during her attack. However, she avoids harming children, indicating she is not entirely ruthless.

Upon confirming her brother’s survival, she becomes overwhelmed with emotion and breaks into tears, showing her strong attachment to him. She even secretly asks Jin Kagemori for a photo of Yuru, suggesting a strong brother centered affection.

Background

Asa once escaped Higashimura Village with her parents, leaving Yuru behind. However, both her mother and father later disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and she now lives with the Kagemori family.

Having role models like Hikaru Kagemori, who makes a living as a manga artist, and companions like Gabby who share a similar situation, Asa has built a certain level of trust with the family. The Kagemori household has become her place of belonging after losing her parents.

In truth, Asa has died once.

It is said that the powers of Break and Seal are granted by a Tsugai called “Kai,” which exists at the boundary between the world of the dead and the living. Knowing this legend, assassins from Higashimura abducted and killed Asa. After gaining the power of Break, she revived in the living world and killed those who had kidnapped her.

Her right eye changed after this incident, which is why she now conceals it with an eyepatch.

Abilities

It is said that twins who divide night and day possess the powers of Break (解, Kai) and Seal (封, Fuu) . Asa holds the power of Break.

■Tsugai: Yin and Yang
Her Tsugai bears a pattern resembling half of the Taijitu symbol. When combined, they grow into a giant form and can absorb objects.

Originally, they belonged to a faction that attacked the Kagemori family. However, Asa used the power of Break to forcibly cancel their contract and form a new one, becoming their temporary master. She names them “Ohagi” and “Daifuku,” reflecting her love for sweets.

■Power of “Break”
This ability is described as the power to forcibly break apart anything in the world.

When used offensively, it can generate immense destructive force capable of shattering rock walls. However, it appears difficult to control, as shown in the story where she struggles to suppress its power. If mastered, it could be used with precision, such as separating the peel from an apple.

Historically, a user of this ability 400 years ago used it in battle to separate human heads from their bodies.

Relationships

■Yuru
Yuru is a kind and deeply caring older brother who always worried about the fake Asa confined in the cage during their time in the village.

Although he initially distrusted the real Asa upon their reunion, believing her to be the attacker of the village, his attitude softened once he realized she was genuine. He is now grateful that she is being cared for by the Kagemori family.

In the first chapter, he also shows a possessive side, telling a childhood friend that someone like him is unworthy of meeting Asa.

■Gabby
Gabby works as an assistant to Hikaru Kagemori, the eldest son of the Kagemori family, who is also a manga artist.
