A Unique Love Comedy Mystery Heads to Anime

The manga A Pen, Handcuffs and a Common Law Marriage, currently serialized in Young Animal by Hakusensha, is based on the original work by Shinichi Sawaragi and illustrated by tank Gasuyama. The series has surpassed 400,000 copies in circulation.

The story follows an unconventional duo: Tsugumi Kuchinashi, a high school girl who never speaks and communicates only through writing, and Eiji Kirisame, a serious and dedicated middle aged detective focused solely on his work. Despite their differences in age and position, the two form a compelling partnership that blends romance, comedy, and mystery.

Teaser PV Highlights Characters and Tone

The teaser PV features panels from the original manga. Though brief, the video effectively showcases the distinct personalities of Tsugumi and Kirisame while capturing the pacing and charm that define the series.

Creator Comments (Full Translation)

To celebrate the anime adaptation announcement, congratulatory comments and illustrations were shared by both original creators.

■Original Creator: Shinichi Sawaragi
Since this is a work where the heroine does not speak a single word, I honestly thought an anime adaptation would be absolutely impossible. It is all thanks to everyone who supported the series and wished for it to be animated. Thank you very much. I have no idea what it will be like or whether it will work without dialogue, so I am really looking forward to it. Please look forward to seeing A Pen, Handcuffs and a Common Law Marriage come to life in animation.

Thank you so much for the anime adaptation of A Pen, Handcuffs and a Common Law Marriage. To all the readers and the anime staff, I truly appreciate your support. Animation offers expressions and direction that cannot be achieved in manga. It will have movement, voices, background music, and even theme songs, and I am personally very excited to see it all come together.
