Berserk English Edition Surpasses 10 Million Copies, Global Series Reaches 70 Million as Publisher Says Creator Kentaro Miura “Continues to Be Mourned Worldwide”

The Berserk English edition has surpassed 10 million copies in circulation, marking a major milestone for the globally acclaimed dark fantasy series. Hakusensha announced on the third that sales of the English version of Berserk have exceeded 10 million copies. To commemorate the achievement, North American publisher Dark Horse Comics released a short celebratory video on social media highlighting the milestone.

A Legendary Dark Fantasy Loved Worldwide

Berserk is an epic dark fantasy set in a world of swords, sorcery, and demonic creatures. The story follows its protagonist Guts as he battles grotesque monsters and grows through relentless trials. The manga began serialization in 1989 in Monthly Animal House before transferring to Young Animal. It was adapted into a television anime from 1997 to 1998, later into a theatrical anime trilogy from 2012 to 2013, and again into a television anime from 2016 to 2017.

The comic series has reached a total of 70 million copies in circulation worldwide and has been translated into more than 20 countries and regions.

Creator Kentaro Miura passed away in May 2021 at the age of 54 due to acute aortic dissection. Following the publication of the latest chapter in September 2021, the series went on hiatus. Volume 41 was released in December 2021. In June 2022, serialization resumed from Episode 365 under the supervision of Miura close friend and fellow manga artist Kouji Mori, with Studio Gaga, comprised of Miura former assistants, continuing the artwork. The series is currently available up to Volume 43.

The English edition of Berserk is published in two formats: a standard edition in the same B6 size as the Japanese version, and a deluxe B5 format that compiles three Japanese volumes into one. Fourteen volumes of the deluxe edition have been released to date. In the 2024 United States annual comic sales ranking, Volume 1 of the deluxe edition secured the top position.
