TRIGUN STARGAZE Episode 1 Airs With TARAKO’s Voice Despite Her Passing, Zazie Role to Be Taken Over by Minami Takayama

The latest installment in the TRIGUN anime franchise, TRIGUN STARGAZE, aired its first episode on the TV Tokyo network in Japan. Although it had already been announced that the role of Zazie the Beast would be taken over by Minami Takayama following the passing of voice actress TARAKO in March 2024, Episode 1 featured TARAKO’s voice performance, deeply moving both the production staff and fans.

This was made possible because TRIGUN STARGAZE adopted a production method known as pre-scoring, in which voice recordings are completed before animation production begins. As a result, TARAKO’s recorded performance as Zazie the Beast was preserved and used in the first episode.

On the official website, the production team shared a statement honoring TARAKO, who portrayed Zazie the Beast in both TRIGUN STAMPEDE and TRIGUN STARGAZE. They expressed profound sorrow over her passing and praised her for fully capturing the character’s unsettling presence, dignity, and charm, noting how her performance was a great source of support for the entire staff.

Regarding Episode 1, the team explained that thanks to pre-scoring, they were able to reunite with TARAKO’s Zazie the Beast once more. They conveyed their heartfelt gratitude for her contributions and offered their sincere condolences.

The statement also addressed future episodes, confirming that from Zazie’s next appearance onward, the role will be performed by Minami Takayama. The staff encouraged viewers to watch Zazie’s journey to the end, describing it as a character brought to life by TARAKO and guided to its conclusion by Takayama.

Fans who watched Episode 1 quickly reacted online, expressing surprise and emotion upon hearing TARAKO’s voice again. Many commented on how distinctive and powerful her lower, mature tone was, with some calling the episode a precious farewell and likely her final work.

TARAKO made her voice acting debut in 1981 with the anime Urusei Yatsura. She also debuted as a singer-songwriter in 1983 and became widely known as the voice of Maruko in Chibi Maruko-chan from 1990 onward. Her other notable roles include Taruruuto in Magical Taruruuto-kun and Chibi King in Mushiking: Guardian of the Forest. In 1996, she founded the theater troupe WAKU, where she worked extensively as a playwright and director. TARAKO passed away in March 2024.
