Japan Launches Nationwide “Zootopia Project” with TOHO Cinemas Featuring Parodies of Detective Conan and Toy Story

Set in a paradise where animals live like humans, the first film Zootopia (2016) became a global hit. Now, its long-awaited sequel arrives. On the 18th, the “Japan Zootopia Project Declaration Event” officially launched nationwide promotional activities.

On the 25th, Zojoji Temple in Tokyo was illuminated in Zootopia’s symbolic green, transforming for one night into “ZOOJOJI.” Japanese voice cast members including Aya Ueto as Judy, Toshiyuki Morikawa as Nick, Hiro Shimono as Gary the snake, Noriko Eguchi as Nibbles the beaver streamer, and Ryosuke Yamada as Paubert gathered to pray for the film’s success.

In the first film, the playful parodies of real-world brands and films became one of its most memorable features. This spirit now leaps into the real world.

Starting on the 27th, TOHO Cinemas transforms into ZOOHO Cinemas under the concept “What if TOHO Cinemas existed in the world of Zootopia?” A special website opens for a limited time, designed so realistically it could be mistaken for the real thing, while its content is fully Zootopia-themed.
Highlights include

- a “Howling Theater” where applause, cheers, and even howling are permitted
- a concession stand featuring surprise menu items using carrots, a rabbit favorite
- numerous film posters redesigned in Zootopia parody style

For instance, Toy Story 5 becomes Snake Story 5 referencing Gary; Fantastic Four: First Steps becomes Fantastic Fur; and The Devil Wears Prada 2 is reimagined as The Devil Wears Fuzzy 2.

A major point of interest is that not only Disney titles but also popular Japanese films receive Zootopia-style reinterpretations. This year’s blockbuster Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback has been parodied as Nick the Cop: Ideal Paradise (Zootopia), while the upcoming Romantic Killer (releasing Dec. 12) appears as Zoomantic Thriller.

The screening schedule even lists features unique to animal audiences, such as stage greetings by Gazelle and late-night shows tailored for nocturnal animals. The result is a uniquely immersive theater experience fans will want to visit.

Additionally, TOHO Cinemas Hibiya, Shibuya, and Namba will host special themed decorations celebrating ZOOHO Cinemas. Fans can enjoy not only the website but also physical installations that recreate a movie theater from within the world of Zootopia.
