Live Action The Legend of Zelda Film Begins Shooting as Shigeru Miyamoto Confirms Production Is “Progressing Smoothly”
The live action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, set for theatrical release on May 7, 2027, has officially begun filming. The production stars Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

The film is produced jointly by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director Fellow at Nintendo, and Avi Arad, the head of Arad Productions Inc. and producer of numerous global blockbuster hits. Production is being carried out by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., with Wes Ball serving as director. Nintendo is funding more than half of the film’s production budget, while Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. is handling worldwide distribution and participating as a co-investor.

Nintendo commented that by taking the lead in visual adaptations of its IP, the company aims to offer audiences around the world new opportunities to experience the entertainment Nintendo has cultivated, through channels different from dedicated gaming platforms.

Regarding the start of filming, Miyamoto shared an update:
“We have officially begun full-scale production of the live action The Legend of Zelda film together with Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, amid breathtaking natural scenery. Production is progressing smoothly, so we would be grateful if you could continue to watch over us quietly. The film is scheduled to premiere on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience a little while longer.”
