Demon Slayer Movie Surpasses 100 Billion Yen Worldwide, Marking a Historic First for Japanese Cinema
The latest Demon Slayer film, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part One Akaza Returns, has officially surpassed 100 billion yen (approx. 647 million USD) in worldwide box office revenue, marking the first time in history that a Japanese film has reached this milestone. The data was announced on November 17 based on figures compiled by Aniplex.

The film opened on July 18 in Japan. According to the announcement, it drew 26,045,587 admissions domestically over 122 days, earning a total of 37,927,589,200 yen (approx. 245.4 million USD) at the Japanese box office.

From August onward, the movie gradually rolled out across international markets. As of November 16, the cumulative worldwide total, including Japan, reached 89,177,796 admissions and 106,370,568,950 yen (approx. 688.1 million USD), surpassing the historic 100 billion yen threshold for a Japanese film for the first time.

Demon Slayer is based on the popular manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020. Set in the Taisho era, it follows Tanjiro Kamado, a boy whose family is slaughtered by man-eating demons. His sister Nezuko is turned into a demon, prompting Tanjiro to join the Demon Slayer Corps to restore her humanity and avenge his family. The manga has exceeded 220 million copies in circulation worldwide.

The television anime Tanjiro Kamado: Unwavering Resolve Arc aired from April to September 2019 and became a major hit, followed by the blockbuster 2020 film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which earned about 51.7 billion yen (approx. 334.5 million USD) worldwide, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

The franchise has since expanded into video games and stage productions. The Entertainment District Arc aired in December 2021, the Swordsmith Village Arc in April 2023, and the Hashira Training Arc from May to June 2024. The film trilogy Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is currently in production.
In Infinity Castle Part One Akaza Returns, Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps engage in a climactic final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji and the Upper Rank demons within the Infinity Castle, the demons’ stronghold.
