Ayana Taketatsu Amazed by Aura’s Popularity in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End — Praised for the “Die by Your Own Hand” Scene: “The Way Her Hair Snaps Apart…”

Voice actor Ayana Taketatsu appeared at the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 2nd Anniversary Screening Event in Tokyo on October 11. Taketatsu, who plays the fan-favorite character Aura, delighted attendees by performing one of her most iconic lines on stage.

It was her first time appearing at an event for the series, and as she took the stage to warm applause from fans who had just finished watching the “Aura the Guillotine” arc on the big screen, she shared, “I’m nervous being up here alone, but I’m so happy I get to stand on stage as Aura.”

Despite appearing in only three episodes, Aura left an overwhelming impression on viewers. Reflecting on when she was first cast, Taketatsu said, “When I received the offer, I already knew about Frieren because it was such a popular series. I was thrilled to learn that Aura was a beloved character in the original manga.”

Describing her first impression of Aura, she noted, “She’s a demon who’s lived for 500 years—cold, calculating, and detached from human emotion. I imagined her as someone who wouldn’t be shaken by ordinary things. During recording, I wanted to focus on her cunning intellect and her calm, unflappable nature.”

She also revealed a behind-the-scenes story from the dubbing session: “For the line, ‘Himmel is no longer here,’ I initially delivered it with a hint of provocation. But the director told me, ‘Say it without malice—just plainly, as if stating a fact,’ and that changed the tone completely.”

Taketatsu went on to describe the atmosphere during recording as “surprisingly warm and cheerful. Everyone was so relaxed that it was hard to believe we were recording a scene about killing people.”

Asked which scene from the anime left the deepest impression on her, she replied, “When Aura is ordered to ‘die by your own hand,’ I was struck by how beautifully it was depicted. The way her hair loosens, strands snapping one by one, and yet the moment her neck is cut isn’t shown—it’s that subtle, elegant direction that made her so memorable despite her short screen time.”

When asked to share a memorable quote, she once again performed the line “Because Himmel is rotten in the ground” live on stage, holding an Aura panel to the delight of the audience, who responded with loud applause.

During the event, Taketatsu also answered questions sent from fellow cast members Atsumi Tanezaki (Frieren), Kana Ichinose (Fern), and Chiaki Kobayashi (Stark), who appeared at the “Departure Arc” stage event held on September 26. When asked by Kobayashi who her favorite character in Frieren is, she answered, “I really like Fern. She seems like such a fragile girl at first, but when she talks with Frieren, she feels like a mother figure. I love their relationship—it’s such a beautiful bond between mentor and apprentice.”

Ichinose’s question was, “If you could have any magic from the world of Frieren, what would it be?” Taketatsu laughed and answered, “A spell to find lost things—I’d use it all the time in my daily life.”

Tanezaki asked if she had ever imagined Aura becoming such a popular character. Taketatsu replied with a smile, “Not at all. I had no idea she would grow so big beyond me—it makes me so happy to see how much people love her.”

As the event drew to a close, Taketatsu expressed her gratitude to the fans: “This was my first Frieren event, and I’m filled with joy. It brought back memories of recording and reminded me of how I approached Aura as a character. I’m so happy she’s loved even after two years. Frieren’s journey will continue, so please keep watching and supporting them.”
