The theme of the illustrations is “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End × Legal Professions.” As this year’s festival theme is “career experiences,” two specially drawn illustrations were unveiled for the event. They feature Frieren in the role of a judge, and Aura seemingly on trial in a courtroom setting.

Online reactions to the illustrations include comments like: “Frieren: ‘Confess, Aura,’” “Aura on the witness stand,” “Aura’s holding the scales but still getting judged—lol,” “Defendant Aura,” and “The verdict: The defendant shall execute herself.”

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is based on the manga of the same name, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since April 2020. It’s a “post-epic fantasy” that tells the story of what happens after a hero party defeats the Demon King. The elf mage Frieren embarks on new adventures in a world without the hero, joined by new companions along the way.

Set in the unique timeline of a “post-Demon King defeat,” the series weaves together emotionally resonant drama and dialogue, battles involving magic and swords, and moments of unexpected humor—elements that have captivated a wide readership. It won the top prize at the Manga Taisho 2021, and has become a hit series with over 30 million copies in circulation. The anime adaptation aired from September 2023 to March 2024.
