In the posted notice, titled “Announcement on Happy Meal Campaigns,” the company stated:
“As part of our review of Happy Meal-related initiatives, we have decided to cancel the campaign that was scheduled to begin on Friday, August 29.”
During the planned campaign period, customers purchasing a Happy Meal will instead receive toys and other items that were previously distributed in past campaigns.
The decision follows widespread issues with the Pokémon-themed Happy Meal campaign that started on August 9, which offered limited-edition cards. At multiple locations, bulk purchases and reselling were reported, leading to shortages.
Abandoned products and large-scale reselling activities were heavily criticized across social media platforms. McDonald’s Japan acknowledged the problem, stating:
“These circumstances clearly go against our philosophy and commitment to providing enjoyable dining experiences for children and families, which we have valued for many years. We sincerely acknowledge that our response to this situation was insufficient. To prevent recurrence, we will implement the following measures promptly and thoroughly.”
