New “Cyborg 009” Anime Announced as Iconic Series Marks 61st Anniversary
Ishimori Productions officially announced on July 19 the production of a new anime titled Cyborg 009: NEMESIS, commemorating the 61st anniversary of the legendary manga Cyborg 009 by the late Shotaro Ishinomori.

Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen King (published by Shonen Gahosha) on July 19, 1964, Cyborg 009 has remained a beloved classic in Japan’s science fiction and hero genre. In its 60th anniversary year, the franchise saw a surge in commemorative projects, including its first stage play and a vertical full-color comic remake. Now, this iconic series is set to begin a new chapter through animation once again.
What Is “Cyborg 009”?
Cyborg 009 follows nine cybernetic warriors, known as the Zero Zero Numbers, led by 009 (Joe Shimamura). Originally modified by an evil organization to become weapons of war, they escape and fight for global peace. The work became a life’s mission for its creator, Shotaro Ishinomori.
About Shotaro Ishinomori
Real Name: Shotaro Onodera
Born January 25, 1938, in Tome District, Miyagi Prefecture (now Tome City)
Ishinomori debuted in 1954 with Nikyuu Tenshi while still in high school and moved to Tokyo upon graduation to pursue a full-time career as a manga artist.
He is widely recognized as the creator of the tokusatsu franchise Kamen Rider and was a pioneer in media mix strategies, producing works across both manga and live-action formats. His major works include Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae, and Manga Nihon no Rekishi (A Manga History of Japan).
In 2006, Kadokawa Publishing began issuing his personal anthology collection titled Shotaro Ishinomori Manga Complete Works, spanning 770 works across 500 volumes. It earned a Guinness World Record for the most comic book publications by a single author.
